*The art & the influence: As an artisan breeder, my botanical focus has always been on crafting nostalgia and euphoria via unique cultivars influenced by all forms of art, counterculture, Americana, global pop culture and various other influences and personal experiences. This approach is reflected in the in the cultivar, the name and the accompanying artwork.
This piece was inspired by South American culture and some family goings on, particularly the annual Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration and my daughter's current experiences at the time navigating teenage years and experimenting with adulthood. I've always been in love with sugar skulls and traditional Mexican attire. There are a lot of beautiful things in this world, but none more beautiful than Hispanic ladies in La Catrina dresses with painted faces. The tradition also sends me way back when I think about how cultures differ when dealing with death and how it's all learned psychology. Ideals shape fundamentals and there's no clearer evidence of that the stark contrast than comparing a funeral to a festival. We were working thru several beloved Death Mask crosses at the time and my daughter was just starting to get interested in canna culture, and it kind of all blended together into a collage of acceptance, understanding that what some cultures view as disturbing, others view as beautiful.
